AJ McCarron was born in Mobile, Alabama, and he spent his childhood there. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School from kindergarten to fourth grade before transferring to St. Paul's Episcopal School. He played football as a child at Trimmier Park and Langan Park in Mobile.

AJ McCarron also played football in high school, and during his junior season of high school at St. Paul, he succeeded in winning the state championship against Briarwood Christian School with his school team.
