In 2018, the pair met at a charity event in Windsor and began dating. Mark served in the Household Cavalry's Life Guards Regiment at Combermere Barracks, and Princes William and Harry were members of its Blues and Royals division.

Mark served with "distinction" in Iraq and Bosnia, according to the Daily Mail. According to colleagues, he is a "natural leader" with expertise in close-quarters warfare and weapons training. The soldier is currently believed to be training recruits at the Army Training Centre in Pirbright, Surrey.

They split up in December 2020. Friel stated that their relationship could not stand the test of lockdown. She told the Daily Mail, "I'm getting through it and getting stronger; I've done a lot of self-work... It happens to the best of us. Some relationships will strengthen [under lockdown], while others will just not stand the test of time."

Anna went on, saying, "Heartbreak is the worst feeling because you believe it will never go away, yet if you can go through a period like this when you can't distract yourself, you can get through anything. You can't just go out and meet the people or go to the pub and do whatever you want. Walking and sobbing both help me!"

David and Friel separated in 2010 after nearly ten years together, but they stay on good terms and live close to co-parent Gracie. "We walk to school together, or if Gracie needs new shoes, the three of us go shoe shopping together," Anna later recalled of the bond.
