Diane Kochilas attended New York University after high school graduation. There, she graduated with a B.A. degree in Journalism in 1981. Her father, a Greek immigrant from the island of Ikaria, was a professional chef. He was Diane's early influence, but sadly, he passed away when she was ten years old. At age 12, Kochilas visited Greece and her father's native village of Christos, Raches, for the first time, where she developed her interest in food and cooking.

As a consulting chef, Diane Kochilas contributed to the opening of many Greek restaurants in North America, including Volos in Toronto, Canada, Axia in Bergen County, New Jersey, and Avli in Winnetka, Illinois.
