Chan rose to prominence as the goalkeeper Empty Hand in Shaolin Soccer and as the Axe Gang boss Brother Sum in Kung Fu Hustle, both directed by Stephen Chow. He was chosen to play in the biographical TV series The Legend of Bruce Lee in 2008 because of his resemblance to the famous martial artist.

Chan played Lee again in the 2015 film Ip Man 3, which was loosely based on Lee's mentor's life. He reprised his role in Ip Man 4, the franchise's final installment, released in 2019.
