David Banda was born to a Malawian family in the southern part of Africa to his father, Yohane Banda and mother, Marita Banda. After his mother's demise, his father abandoned him. He was then sent to Home of Hope Orphanage in the Mchinji region.

The pop singer Madonna adopted Banda in 2006 after a month of her initial visit to the orphanage while touring one of her charity programs. Banda's health was deteriorating at that time as he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was on the verge of death. The diva adopted Banda just one month after she gave birth to her first child.

Madonna named Banda David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie after knowing his birthplace and as she was married to Guy Ritchie at that time. She was fighting for custody of her biological son with her then-husband as they were divorcing each other.

Knowing about the star singer's personal life issues, Yohane was worried about his son's future and claimed that he would withdraw the custody as their divorce could negatively impact his child. Once again, Madonna had to go through the adoption process.
