They happened to sit next to each other and started talking. Eliza inquired about Eric's favorite screenwriter, and he replied, "David Rayfiel." What he didn't realize was that Rayfiel was Eliza's father.

The couple started dating right away and married on August 16, 1992. Unfortunately, Eric developed a long-term addiction to cocaine and marijuana.

Eric's dependency on the former was so severe that Eliza once gave him an ultimatum: quit or lose his wife. He stopped using cocaine but continued to use cannabis.

Eliza opened up about those difficult years in an interview with Lifestyle Magazine TV. She claims that addicts will say they can quit at any time but have no idea what it's like to be their significant other.

Eliza continued, saying: "They don't have much of a choice." They're not making any decisions. They've been made fun of. This substance has already chosen and enslaved them."

Despite the fact that Eric and Eliza Roberts did not have children together, they raised very talented children as a pair. Eliza once described actress Emma Roberts as a "treasure" and an "amazing woman."

Eric had a custody battle with Cunningham over their daughter, it was later revealed. Eric claims that his older sister sided with Kelly Roberts during the legal battle.

Roberts is an actor who has appeared in over 560 movies and TV shows, making him one of the most in-demand screen performers. He is best known for his portrayal of Salvatore 'The Boss' Maroni in the critically acclaimed 2008 action crime film The Dark Knight, alongside Christopher Bale, the late Heath Ledger, and Aaron Eckhart.

Eric is the son of former actors and playwrights Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. They met while touring with a military production of George Washington Slept Here. They co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in 1963, just off Juniper Street in Midtown Atlanta. 

In Decatur, Georgia, they ran a children's acting school. Roberts' mother worked as a church secretary and real estate agent, while his father sold vacuum cleaners.

Roberts' parents divorced in 1971, and it was finalized in early 1972. He stayed in Atlanta with his father Walter, estranged from his sisters. Walter passed away from cancer in March 1977.
