King grew up with three younger sisters and spent most of her childhood in Turkey, where her father was stationed. Gayle later returned to the United States, where she graduated in 1976 with a double majority in psychology and sociology from the University of Maryland.

King also worked at a television station, WTOP-TV, while in college, and after graduation, she was hired as a production assistant at WJZ-TV in Baltimore. Gayle then relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where she worked for WDAF-TV as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. 

King has received numerous awards for her journalism, including three Emmys. She won the American Women in Radio & Television Gracie Award for Outstanding Radio Talk Show in 2008 and the New York Women in Communications Matrix Award and Individual Achievement Award for Host-Entertainment/Information in 2010.

According to PEOPLE, Gayle King celebrated the impending arrival of her grandson with a fun-filled, COVID-safe baby shower for her daughter. Kirby Bumpus, the CBS This Morning anchor's daughter, is expecting her first child, a son, and in late July, King hosted a baby shower for 16 close family and friends who had been vaccinated and tested negative for COVID.

The three-day trip was organized by Details owner Jeannie Young Savage and took place at the Montage Laguna Beach resort in California. "It grew into something bigger than a baby shower. Kriby, was without a doubt at the heart of the celebration, but it also became a celebration of friendship, a celebration of women, and a celebration of coming together after things had been so difficult for so many people," Kings tell Oprah.

Gayle added, "To be honest, I had no idea it would be that way. I expected it to be pretty and nice, but I believe it evolved into something far more significant."
