Julie Cypher's first husband was actor Lou Diamond Phillips, whom she married in 1986. She was married to Phillips for five years before she got together with Melissa Etheridge in 1990.

In an interview with The Advocate in 1994, Julie and Melissa first expressed their desire to have children together to the public. Etheridge said, 'I think one of the many fears people have about homosexuality is around children. I think that the more gay parents raise good, strong, compassionate people, the better the world will be.'

Julie Cypher gave birth to daughter Bailey in February 1997 and Beckett in November 1998. Both children were conceived by artificial insemination. The couple kept the identity of the biological father secret at first, but later they revealed that the rock legend David Crosby had donated the sperm.

Etheridge and Cypher were high-profile gay rights activists while they were together. In 1999 however, Cypher revealed in a therapy session that she was 'not gay.' This led to the split of the relationship between the couple in September 2000.

Julie Cypher attended Bates Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 1974-1976. She used to take dance lessons and initiated violin lessons during these years. She also used to actively participate in Girl Scouts, where she attended Camp Scott and Tiawah Hills Ranch. Later, Julie attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied television and film.
