On July 14, a judge in Jussie Smollett's reopened case met with him. A special Cook Country grand jury returned a six-count indictment accusing  Smollett of lying to Chicago police in February 2020.

Jussie has maintained his innocence in the face of the new charges, pleading not guilty. After a judge found unprecedented irregularities in how Cook Country State's Attorney Kim Foxx handled the case, a special prosecutor was assigned to look into the entire case. 

Smollett was interviewed by FOX News moments before earning the courthouse, and he described the proceedings as a dog and pony show. Jussie said that two masked men attacked him as he walked home in the early hours of January 29, 2019.

Jussie claimed the men insulted him, beat him, and tied a noose around his neck before fleeing. The disgraced actor also insisted that at least one of his assailants was white and told him in MAGA country, referencing former President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, Make American Great Again.

However, shortly after, brother Bola and Ola Osundario came forward and told police that the actor had paid them $3,500 to jump him on a Chicago street to raise his profile because he was unhappy with his role on Empire.

Smollett was familiar with the two brothers because they were associated with the FOX series. The actor denied Bola and Ola's allegations, who claims the brothers are not telling the truth.
