5'2'' tall actress first became interested in writing when she began writing a report on a fictitious book once a month in order to win Pizza Hut gift cards from her school. Scafaria had written and staged her first play in Red Bank, New Jersey, when she was 17 years old.

Lorene attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, after graduating from Holmdel High School in 1995. But she could not pay Lafayette's tuition and went to Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey. Scafaria earned a BA in English with a minor in theater from Montclair.
