He led the team to the Southern Conference title and a berth in the Tangerine Bowl in 1970. In 1972, he went to North Carolina State University, where he had a 33–12–3 record in four seasons. His 1973 team of the university won the ACC Championship, which was one of the most significant achievements in his career.

The next team Lou Holtz coached was the New York Jets, a NFL playing elite football team. He was selected as the head coach of the team on February 10, 1976.
