Maria Sharapova, a retired tennis player, has announced that she and her fiancé Alexander Gilkes are expecting their first child, according to Eonline.

On her 35th birthday, the former World No. 1 tennis player announced her pregnancy on Instagram, praising the commencement of "beautiful beginnings." She shared a selfie of herself on the beach, beaming at the camera while caressing her expanding baby bulge.

"Eating birthday cake for two has always been my expertise," the athlete wrote in the caption.

Friends and relatives, including actor Lily Collins and Australian model Lara Worthington, raced to congratulate the pair in the comments section. Under Sharapova's post, Gilkes, 42, also posted a heart-eyed emoji. 

Since December 2020, Sharapova has been engaged to Gilkes, a British businessman and friend of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The couple announced their engagement on both of their Instagram accounts in 2018, after openly confirming their relationship.

After 28 years in tennis, Sharapova announced her retirement in February 2020. She is one of only ten women in history to complete the career Grand Slam, and the only Russian to do it.
