When he showed up as a contestant in the show, it was hard for people to digest his same look even after ten years.

While people are convinced he did get plastic surgery in his gap, but Mark addressed this on his Twitter, saying, "Silly, I have to respond to ridiculous plastic surgery rumors, but here goes...I have NEVER had any plastic surgery done; I’m just naturally beautiful. Funny to hear these so-called experts insist I have...back to the real world (btw if that’s your thing, not judging, do you)."

In 1992, McGrath started his career with the band Sugar Ray along with his friends Rodney Sheppard, Murphy Karges, and Stan Frazier in Orange County, California. In 1994, the band signed with Atlantic Records. Their first success came in 1997 with the song "Fly."

McGrath's personal popularity soared as he appeared on such national magazine covers as those of "Rolling Stone" and "Spin." He also made numerous appearances on MTV, VH1, and various talk and awards shows. McGrath and Alexakis decided to split ways in 2013.

He appeared in Smashing Pumpkins' Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts) video, released in October 2018.

McGrath and Kingsland are parents to twins Lydon Edward and Hartley Grace, born on April 29, 2010.
