Despite meeting all the beautiful actresses throughout his career and dating a few famous ones, McConaughey found his future wife Camila Alves in a club.

The couple has been married for over 7 years now and seem to have no difficulty whatsoever staying that way. But how did it come to be? How did Hollywood's most promising star at the time fall in love with a woman that he had never met before in his life? Well, let us tell you that story.

In The Words of Matthew McConaughey -"What is that?"

The word 'that' in the question, believe it or not, refers to Camila Alves. The year was 2006 and Matthew was in the middle of doing all sorts of romantic comedies like Failure to Launch. Now for the most part of his life, Matthew had not been a club guy. But for this particular night, he was a club guy. He was out with his buddy Lance Armstrong and few other friends in a club called Joan's on Sunset Boulevard.

McConaughey, being the guy that he is, was making margaritas at the table when he sees this sort of aqua-green figure at the corner of his eyes. He looks up to see Camila Alves - who recently revealed her favorite family dinner - and goes, "What is that?".

Telling his story, Matthew said to Jess Cagle, 

I didn't say who is that, I said what that is. And then that went and sat down and I tried to get that's attention. And as I was trying to get that's attention across the room it went in my head. It was like this is not the kind of woman you call over across the room, McConaughey. Get your ass out of the chair and go get her. Which I did.

The same story, however, sounds weirder on Camila's part. Believe it or not, Alves did not recognize who Matthew was. As per Oprah Mag, Alves explained Matthew had a long beard while sporting a rasta hat. Matthew was probably giving off the whole stoner guy vibe because Camila admitted to not being interested in him when they first met. 

Later, only when she saw Lance, she came to her senses and realized that she had ignored Matthew McConaughey.

Matthew Got Shut Down TWICE That Same Night

Imagine you meet a gorgeous lady, spend the whole night trying to get her attention, and when it's time to leave, she doesn't have her car. That's your chance to swoop in.

That's how Matthew got his opportunity with his now-married partner Camila. McConaughey swooped in and offered Alves to spend a night in his house and gave her his guest bedroom. Twice, he went into Camila's room that night, and both times he got shut down. Matthew claimed that he didn't even have the opportunity to lock lips with Camila that night.

Saying to Howard Stern, Camila's husband said, 

I did sneak down to the guest bedroom twice that night and got booted out. Here's the cool moment that I went 'wow.'

Matthew explained how he was wowed by his future wife when he saw her having breakfast with his buddies and housekeep the next morning, laughing like they've been buddies for ten years. 

He said, 

That's a woman who knows herself. That's a woman who's comfortable.

The two then went on a 45-minute drive to get Alves's car, nothing but music, and completely traction free time between both. After begging a lot, Matthew finally managed to score a first official date with Camila three nights later the pair first met. Then it was dates after dates, and as they say, the rest was history.
