Born Amy McBride in 1972, Amy and Phil have one of the most successful pro sports marriages. The couple managed to stay together for over 23 years, and still, their union shows no signs of coming to an abrupt end anytime soon. Amy Mickelson attended the same university as Phil, Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.
Phil and Amy were romantically linked since their time at the University, the pair dated for four years before making things official.
Phil met Amy McBride in 1992 when she was a junior at Arizona State University in Tempe. Amy was also a member of the Phoenix Suns cheer-leading squad. Although still an amateur, Phil had already won the PGA Tour Northern Telecom Open the year before. But Amy didn't know who he was.

In their 2004 book One Magical Sunday, Amy said,
When he told me he was a pro golfer, I thought he worked in the shop at a golf course.
The duo played tennis on their first date, and things went on from there. After a year of seeing each other around Phil's golf schedule, he invited Amy to attend the Bob Hope Celebrity Pro-Am in Palm Springs, Calif., not far from Phoenix. It wasn't long after the tournament that the twosome started getting close.
After four years of dating, the partners got married on Nov. 16, 1996. Three years later, Amy gave birth to their first child, Amanda. Phil, who's worth $375 million - was in the middle of a Sunday round of the 1999 U.S. Open, so Amy decided not to inform her husband of going into labor. Phil finished in second place right behind the late Payne Stewart.

Their second child, Sophia, was born in 2001. However, the birth of their youngest son, Evan, proved more challenging than the other. Amy faced a life-threatening delivery in 2003 with Evan, and the child did not get breath for seven minutes. Furthermore, Amy ruptured an artery in her uterus. Fortunately, both survived the problematic birth — the couple share three children among themselves.
Amy's name came up once more in the headlines when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Mickelson announced that he would be suspending his participation in PGA Tour play at the time to be with his wife. Nevertheless, she urged him to rejoin the tour soon after.
Phil and Amy's marriage endured a great deal, and yet still, the wedded pair come out on top no matter what. It indeed proves that the Mickelson couple is in it together for better or worse.
