He had undergone gastric bypass surgery in 2003.

While he was working as a judge for 'American Idol' in season 2, Jackson was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The diagnosis changed his life and his approach to how he lived his life.

In order for his own well being and healthy living, he worked with numerous fitness experts, nutritionists and mental health experts to lose 114 pounds. 'Managing type 2 diabetes also runs hand in hand with managing your weight, he said to New York Daily News. His new phase of life also encouraged him to co-found Unify Health Labs, which he says will help 'other people in their journey to get healthy — while sparing them the long, confusing search I went through.'

'You have to change the way you think about food,' he says. 'You have to almost have a complete divorce break up … and start back bit by bit and find out the things that work with your body, and you also find out the allergies and really pay attention to how you feel.'
