Ward was proclaimed season champion because he did not fall in the bottom two during the competition. And Shayne won by a margin of 1.2 percent of the vote, out of an estimated 10.8 million phone votes cast by spectators.

Then Shayne secured a recording contract with Syco Music, and his first single, That's My Goal, was released on December 21, 2005, in the United Kingdom. Ward also received an Ivor Novello Award for Best Selling Single. His second single, No Promises, a version of a Bryan Rice song, was released on April 10, 2006, and his self-titled first album, Shayne Ward, was released on April 17, 2006.

In November 2006, Ward also released his autobiography, My Story, as well as his fourth single and first off his second album, If That's OK with You, which was originally scheduled to be released on August 20, 2007, but was postponed and became a double A-side single with No U Hang Up. On September 24, 2007, it was eventually released.

On November 26, 2007, Shayne released his second album, Breathless, made his stage debut at London's O2 Arena, and made a visit to his hometown of Manchester at the MEN Arena. Ward began working on his third album with producers RedOne and Taio Cruz in 2009, and the album, Obsession, was released on November 15, 2010.

Ward had his first television appearance in over two years after his X-Factor appearance, on Live from Studio Five the day, where he also performed his single.

After the end of his contract with Rock of Ages, Ward declared that he would return to the studio in September 2012. He also played the Artilleryman in the last arena tour of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds in 2014.

Ward was afterward hired to a one-year contract by ITV to play Aidan Connor in Coronation Street on May 12, 2015. Shayne won the 2016 National Television Award and 2016 Inside Soap Award for Best Newcomer for his performance.

Ward announced his departure from the job in early 2018. On May 7, 2018, Shayne made his final appearance as Aidan Connor in a narrative on male suicide. He was cast as the lead in the psychological drama Stairs after departing the show. On October 22, 2021, he also made a voiceover cameo for the death of his on-screen father, Johnny Connor.
