Schmidt went to the University of Delaware from 1988 through the spring of 1993, where he majored in political science. During his time at the university, he registered as a Republican. After college, Steve joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he was a member of the campus Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. Additionally, he did fieldwork for Republican candidates in Delaware, sometimes wearing campaign buttons to class. Steve graduated in the class of 2013.
