Walsh, who was also the Catholic Priest responsible for the Operation in which over 14,000 children under the age of eighteen were given refuge from Communist Cuba. Maximo had a brother with him at the time, but unfortunately, he passed away after some time, their family arrived in the US.

In 1967, he transferred to Florida State University in Tallahassee and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's degree. He also studied at the same university for his Master's degree and graduated in 1970.

Maximo Alvarez soon left the job and decided to start a business of his own. As an independent entrepreneur, he opened Sunshine Citrus Corp, a citrus gift packing and shipping enterprise. The company enjoyed its success for 11 years, after which he relocated his business.
