Abby Lee Miller faced the bankruptcy fraud scandal in 2015, when she was indicted for hiding over $755,000 in secret bank accounts. In 2016, she pleaded guilty and got sentenced to jail for a year and a day.

Abby was unhappy with her body weight so before she went to prison, Abby gave some consideration to her body shape. She got into thinking about how she wanted to lose weight so she would look better if she returned after serving her prison time. 'I hate what I look like on TV and I want to look better and nothing makes the mothers more jealous, she told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. It did not take long before she made her decision, and she opted for gastric sleeve surgery weeks before she knew if she’d have to serve time.

Her surgery and prison time resulted in her losing a significant amount of weight. Her year-long sentence was shortened to eight months after which she got out with much slimmer body. An article by Entertainment Tonight claimed Abby lost around 100 pounds after she got out of prison. Upon her release, Abby underwent d a tummy tuck, breast lift, and skin removal surgery.
Soon after she got released from prison, Abby Lee Miller she again faced another problem in her life, and it was much bigger than the jail time. She was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was taken to the hospital due to 'excruciating neck pain' and arm weakness, before the diagnosis was made.
Abby's struggle with cancer became another factor in her weight loss.

Following the diagnosis, Abby went through radiation, 10 rounds of chemotherapy, and spinal surgery. Spinal surgery left her unable to walk and confined to wheelchair. Nowadays, she's still batting with the disease and relearning to walk. So, one of the main causes of her weight loss in recent times also has been the cancer.
