But he was fortunate to have avoided a catastrophic outcome from the blood clots, which were discovered after his right (pitching) arm swelled grotesquely one night in September.

Mike Foltynewicz underwent surgery to remove part of the first rib on his right side, which had compressed blood vessels in his arm. Before the illness, the 6-foot-4 baseball player weighed 226 pounds, and after the surgery, he grew noticeably thinner. He dropped to about 200 pounds during the offseason and was back to 209 after that.

In 2020, Braves manager Brian Snitker had raised concern over his recent performances. He was questioning whether Mike's velocity decline in the games was the cause of some physical changes, but he was skeptical. 'I don't know because he says he feels good. I don't think it's anything (related to) health,' he said in an interview with Atlanta Journal. 'Yeah, he has lost weight, it looks like. Maybe that has something to do with it.'

Mike says that his parents, Gary and Cindy Foltynewicz, both developed elbow problems one summer due to throwing him so many pitches during batting practice. He graduated in 2010 from Minooka High School in Minooka, Illinois. Currently, he is married to his wife, Brittany Wortmann. The couple shares two children, son Jett and daughter Lola.
