Diane Kochilas was born in New York City on May 17, 1960. Her native Greek father, Thomas Kochilas, and Greek-Italian-American mother, Zoe Picos, raised her in Jackson Heights, Queens. As a child, Diane attended Greek parochial elementary schools and New York City public high school. After high school education, Diane Kochilas attended New York University, where she graduated with a B.A. in Journalism in 1981.

Kochilas's father, a Greek immigrant from the island of Ikaria, was a professional chef and an early influence before passing away in 1970 when Kochilas was 10. She visited Greece and her father's native village of Christos, Raches, for the first time at the age of 12. There, she developed her interest in food and cooking and began pursuing a career in culinary arts.
